Baby Reindeer and A Baby Hippo
There’s a lot to cover but I’ve been a bit out of the pop culture loop while traveling! My dear friend and comedian-you-should-know Laura Peek and her sweet now-husband got married in Nashville on Sunday. It was a picturesque affair, with Autumn leaves gently falling as they read their vows next to a creek. Laura surrounds herself with the best, funniest people and comedians and her wedding was like a comedy festival where nobody had to actually work.
What I Meant To Tell You Last Week
RIP James Earl Jones
One thing I forgot to mention last week, was the passing of the legendary James Earl Jones. By now you’ve all seen wonderful tributes to the actor, but I did want to acknowledge how important he was. James Earl Jones was born in my home state of Mississippi, so I grew up knowing his filmography and being proud of the fact that the voice of Mufasa was a southerner. While he was obviously one of the film greats and I could go on about Coming to America or Field of Dreams, one of my favorite things he did was his guest spot on Will and Grace. He does a scene as Carrie Bradshaw! When I think of James Earl Jones’ voice, it’s not bellowing, “Luke, I am your father.”, but rather screeching “Ladyyy!!”. You must watch this clip of it or watch the whole thing on Season 6 Episode 4.
What I’m Watching
The Emmys
I’ve now seen the highlights, including the best and worst-dressed attendees. I really enjoyed a lot of the fashions from the red carpet, especially the metallic looks and the men who wore white after Labor Day.
The big news of the night was that finally an actual Comedy won for Best Comedy! Brilliantly funny Hacks ousted repeat winner The Bear, which I firmly believe is a drama- maybe a dramedy but definitely not a comedy. Joshua Jackson almost had me convinced with this but no, he’s wrong. The only time I laugh while watching The Bear is when I think about the time I dated a chef and it was not cool and hot, but full of late-night frozen meals and disappointment.
Shōgun took home the most awards and quickly moved to the top of my must-watch list. I was most excited to see Baby Reindeer sweep four awards. A show that started as a solo performance by an unsuccessful comedian at Edinburgh Festival Fringe evolved into a television series that’s now won him several Emmys, which is inspiring as hell. One of my favorite moments I saw from the night was this one between Laverne Cox and Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau.
Tell Me Lies
I started watching Tell Me Lies season one on the airplane and Idk…does it get better? I’m on episode 6, and while I do like it, it’s not quite soapy enough for me but also not serious enough. What are your thoughts, should I keep going?
What’s In The News
Lock Him Up For Life
Kesha has thankfully changed the lyrics of her famous song to “Wake up in the morning like Fuck P. Diddy”. He was denied bail this week after a grand jury indicted him on 3 counts- racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion, and transportation to engage in prostitution. According to NewsWeek, “Federal prosecutors disclosed during a Tuesday press conference that three AR-15 rifles with defaced serial numbers, narcotics, videos of sexual encounters called “Freak Offs,” and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant were seized from his homes. A magistrate judge denied Combs bail later that day.”
Diddy’s lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, is worse than Maury Levy from The Wire. Agnifilo has made a career representing scum of the earth- Syrian arms dealers, the “Phrama Bro” who hiked up the price of lifesaving meds by 5000%, and Keith Raniere, former head of sex cult NXIVM. Raniere’s now serving 120 years and was fined $1.75 million, so hopefully Diddy’s headed for a similar fate.
Buy Yourself Flowers
Miley Cyrus is being sued by a company who partially owns rights to Bruno Mars’ song “If I Was Your Man”. I remember this TikTok that showed how her song “Flowers” is basically a response to Bruno’s song and apparently they’re pissed about the similarities!
What’s Making Me Smile
Moo Deng
At the wedding weekend festivities my friend Carly informed me of a pop culture oversight on my end- Moo Deng. She’s a beautiful Pygmy Hippo from Thailand and the world’s gone crazy for her.
HeeHee Fee
Saints QB Derek Carr was fined for doing a Michael-Jackson-style crotch grab after scoring a touchdown in a game against the Dallas Cowboys. I’m not really a sports girly *shocking!* but I love the New Orleans Saints and this really made me laugh.
The Astronauts Will Vote From Space
Because of course they will, they have no other option. IDK if this makes me smile but I figured y’all might want to know!
